Intervals.

By Morten Gjermundsen(trollstjerne@yahoo.no) The distances between two notes is called an interval. The number of steps between
the notes tell us what interval we have. When the notes are played together we have
what we call a harmonic interval. And if we let the notes follow one another we call
it a melodic interval. We Devide the intervals into two categories perfect and imperfect.
The imperfect intervals have major and minor versions(notes from the major scale can
be found in the major versions, the minor versions can be found if we lower them
one fret.)The perfect intervals do not have major/minor versions.Intervals can be
constructed anywhere on the guitar.Here i will write them from the A major scale. Unison (prime) Major 2nd Major 3rd |-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| |-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| |-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| |-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| |----------0--------|----------2--------|----------4--------| |----------5--------|----------5--------|----------5--------| Perfect 4th perfect 5th Major 6th Major 7th -------------------|-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| -------------------|-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| -------------------|-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| -------------------|-------------------|----------4--------|----------6--------| ----------5--------|----------7--------|-------------------|-------------------| ----------5--------|----------5--------|----------5--------|----------5--------| Octave -------------------| -------------------| -------------------| ----------7--------| -------------------| ----------5--------| If we lower the major versions(major 2nd,major 3rd,major 6th and major 7th) we will find the minor versions. Minor 2nd Minor 3rd Minor 6th Minor 7th |-------------------|-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| |-------------------|-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| |-------------------|-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| |-------------------|-------------------|----------3--------|----------5--------| |----------1--------|----------3--------|-------------------|-------------------| |----------5--------|----------5--------|----------5--------|----------5--------| You may have notice that there wasnīt any minor version of the unison,perfect 4th,
perfect 5th and the octave, thatīs because there isnīt any major/minor versions of
them.I just wrote them because they were found in the major scale. As i mention at
the beginning, the intervals are devided into two categories :perfect and imperfect.
Letīs take a look at the Perfect intervals. The perfect intervals are unison(prime),
perfect 4th,perfect 5th and octave.Here i have written the perfect intervals. Unison(prime) Octave Perfect 4th |-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| |-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| |-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| |-------------------|----------7--------|-------------------| |----------0--------|-------------------|----------5--------| |----------5--------|----------5--------|----------5--------| Perfect 5th -------------------| -------------------| -------------------| -------------------| ----------7--------| ----------5--------| Here are the imperfect intervals Minor 2nd Major 2nd Minor 3rd |-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| |-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| |-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| |-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| |----------1--------|----------2--------|----------3--------| |----------5--------|----------5--------|----------5--------| Major 3rd Minor 6th Major 6th Minor 7th -------------------|-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| -------------------|-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| -------------------|-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| -------------------|----------3--------|----------4--------|----------5--------| ----------4--------|-------------------|-------------------|-------------------| ----------5--------|----------5--------|----------5--------|----------5--------| Major 7th -------------------| -------------------| -------------------| ----------6--------| -------------------| ----------5--------|

Well thatīs all about the intervals for now.Thank you for checking out this pages.

Good luck with your guitar playing.
